Home Automation
UPB AutomationWith robust Universal Powerline Bus (UPB) automation products more readily available, many home and business owners are opting to phase out their existing X10 systems. Since UPB automation is on the way to becoming the new standard for powerline carrier (PLC) based systems, more and more vendors are supporting the technology. UPB offers a way to integrate components into an existing X10 system slowly, with no interference or interoperability concerns. The Key to UPB AutomationUPB automation depends on a method of data transmission that utilizes Pulse Position Modulation (PPM). Digital information is encoded in the position of timed pulses sent along standard AC wiring. A UPB module acts as the receiver of this digital information, converting differences in pulse position into a command to perform a specific action. UPB devices are highly effective in separating digital data from noise generated by many common household appliances. Home automation installation companies as well as do-it-yourselfers are now turning to UPB technology to power their systems. Its cost-effectiveness and ability to retrofit existing homes allows a new direction in automation product development. Since UPB automation has received much positive attention in the industry, it stands to reason that new products will increasingly be introduced in this highly competitive marketplace. Non-professional home automation enthusiasts, or "end users" have typically been the last segment of the market to embrace new product technology. Newer technology tends to be more expensive, at least initially, and residential consumers prefer to wait until the products are simplified and prices have gone down. UPB automation is now being offered in variety of affordable components with the ability to update to control added appliances. ![]() Get all Home Improvement articles via
