X10 Alternatives

by Stephanie Dula

X10 technology is the basis for most home automation products on the market today, though it is quickly being replaced by more reliable alternatives. Its proliferation is especially evident when looking at powerline carrier (PLC) based products. Universal Powerline Bus (UPB) technology is one of these new alternatives that can coexist within the same network as the X10 standard.

This is good news for those who may already have any number of X10 elements in their home automation system. Since so many enthusiasts like the option of adding new components only when necessary, it makes sense to take advantage of individual PLC products. Very few people see the value in having a network of structured cables installed behind existing walls, and this is where PLC products come in.

UPB Benefits

Taking advantage of the powerline network already present in a home or office, PLC products like X10 and UPB offer simple installation without the need for new wiring. UPB has recently emerged as the future direction of PLC products, and many people are taking advantage of its higher reliability as compared to X10. UPB offers a similar design to many of X10's products, operating on a different frequency range to eliminate the hassle of interference between systems.

UPB is unique in its operation, based on a Pulse Position Modulation (PPM) data transmission technique. Most other alternatives to X10 continue to utilize powerline communications. UPB technology is being integrated into a variety of home automation products, including those that feature internet-to-device communications.
