Database Performance
Database ConsultingNo matter how well designed a database or applications is, it will more than likely experience minor troubles or slow downs at some point. In an effort to ward off future problems, many database administrators and IT professionals hire outside database consultants. When a consultant is hired, he or she is typically brought in to analyze the database to determine if any modifications are needed for optimal system performance. Performance EnhancementsDatabase consulting primarily focuses on three areas of performance enhancement. The first phase of the consultation usually involves discussing any plans the business may have for increasing the current size of its database. To meet the company's future needs, the consultant will examine the existing structure of the database and then make recommendations for the most seamless method of expanding the database or for migrating it to a different platform. Another aspect of database consulting is commonly referred to as performance tuning. This process involves identifying and removing any constraints that might occur in the system. By thoroughly examining the users' habits and the SQL statements used in the applications, the consultant can generally figure out ways to eliminate bottlenecks, thereby saving the company thousands of dollars on expensive hardware and software upgrades. Continued database management is another service provided by most database consultants. This could possibly involve regularly monitoring and troubleshooting the database. It could also include installing patches, backing up the database or rebuilding the database. ![]() Get all Database articles via
