Database Performance
Oracle MonitoringNo matter how well-designed an Oracle database or application is, it will not operate at its peak performance level forever. As time goes by, the database will undoubtedly experience glitches in its functionality and eventual slow downs. Therefore, it is imperative that the database administrator (DBA) institute some systematic form of Oracle monitoring so that the he or she will constantly be aware of factors that could negatively impact the performance of the database. Identify Potential ProblemsTo identify the resources and operations that are the biggest contributors to their performance problems the DBA might consider investing in a reliable Oracle monitoring tool. The tools are generally configured to record the exact time it takes for each individual transaction to execute. The tools are typically setup to run on a continual basis, so the DBA can identify delays that occur at any point or time in the system. An Oracle monitoring tool can also assist the DBA in determining which resources are causing the most contention in the system. It does this by logging the time the database spends waiting on each resource. Thus by using the monitoring tool, the DBA is able to more efficiently identify any bottlenecks that exist in the system. In addition to identifying system constraints, many Oracle monitoring tools will offer specific suggestions for resolving any issues discovered. This ultimately saves the DBA valuable time and money. Not to mention undue stress and frustration from having to manually search for potential problems. ![]() Get all Database articles via
