Pool Deck Sealants

by Tadashi Moody

A beautiful pool deck made of concrete, brick, flagstone, wood, or other material can really make the difference in your backyard design and in the future enjoyment of your pool. But using these materials near pools requires some extra steps, because unlike most walking surfaces, water is a constant presence around pool decks. Not only can water have an adverse affect on your deck material, causing stains or deterioration, but it is a vital safety concern as well.

Pool Deck Sealants for Various Surfaces

If your pool deck is made of concrete or another naturally porous material, resurfacing should include a proper sealant that both protects your deck and improves the anti-slip properties of the deck. You may want to choose a no-slip epoxy coating for the highest traction, or if preserving the look of your concrete pool deck is in order, choose a sealer that is clear or invisible. Properly sealing a concrete pool deck can enhance its look while protecting and preserving it for many years to come.

If your pool deck is made of wood, regular treatments will be necessary to protect the structural integrity of the wood as well as enhancing its look. All wood decks should be initially and regularly treated to prevent water intrusion, as water is the primary enemy of wood structures. If water soaks into your wood deck and does not bead up, it is time to reseal. In addition, you can add finishes or coatings to wood decks that improve their traction, in order to prevent slips and falls which are all too common around pools.

Tile is sometimes used as a pool decking material, and this should be properly sealed as well. Properly finishing your tile surfaces will strengthen them and prevent soil buildup which can also be a factor in slips and falls. Regular cleaning and occasional stripping of tile surface finishes will keep them looking good and preserve them as well. Tile surfaces can also be treated to reduce slipping.
