Slip And FallA fact that may surprise many safety-conscious people is that slips, trips, and falls are the second leading cause of fatal accidents in the United States, trailing only automobile accidents. While falls from an elevated position (such as from ladders, high construction sites, and balconies) are a concern as well, falls at the same level constitute the majority of slip-related injuries. Slip and fall accidents are the number one cause of accidents in the hotel and restaurant industry, and undoubtedly a leading cause in a host of others. Over 25,000 people go to the hospital every day for injuries related to slips, trips, and falls. The causes of slip and fall accidents are varied. Foreign objects or obstructions can obviously cause trips, and wet floors are another common cause. Other factors that may not be so obvious include poor lighting, wrinkled carpeting, uneven walking surfaces, and worn walking areas. Preventing Slip and Fall Accidents: A Concern for EveryonePrevention of slip and fall accidents should be a concern for everyone, but is of particular interest for business owners and facility mangers. A good safety program should include worker awareness, proper housekeeping procedures, and regular floor maintenance that reduces the risk of slips and falls. Occupational safety and health codes and standards can provide a good framework for creating a safe work environment, but keeping a few key concepts in mind will help as well. In terms of housekeeping, cleaning liquid spills and oily substances from the floor immediately is the number one way to reduce accidents. Regarding worker awareness, choosing proper footwear and not rushing while in work areas will go a long way in preventing slips and falls. Choosing flooring that is resistant to slips, or applying coatings that will do the same are important parts of creating a safe working environment. ![]() Get all Industrial Supplies articles via
