Headache Relief

by Courtney Salinas

Every different kind of headache can basically be placed in two different categories: primary headaches and secondary headaches. Primary headaches are headaches that stand alone, such as migraines, tension headaches and cluster headaches. Secondary headaches are symptoms of another condition like sinus problems, glaucoma or neck problems. These two kinds of headaches can be equally painful and debilitating, but should be approached in different manners.

Medicine for primary headaches, like IMITREX, target the blood vessels and nerves thought to cause migraines and tension headaches. Since the headache is the source of the problem, the medicine is designed to relieve the headache. With a secondary headache, you of course want to take ibuprofen or acetaminophen to counteract the headache, but it is very important to treat the underlying problem and not just the symptoms.

Natural Headache Relief

Some people prefer to battle headaches naturally, with holistic remedies that don't have the harsh side effects of some painkillers. Holistic favorites like ginkgo and arnica are commonly used to soothe headaches. Peppermint is another favorite that headache sufferers smell or apply to their heads to relieve pain.

If you're experiencing frequent headaches, start keeping a headache diary. This will help you track how severe your headaches have been and how often you have them. This way if you end up going to a doctor for your headaches, you'll have very clear and specific things to tell him or her.
