When I was a kid, martial arts weren't nearly as popular as they are today. Sure, there was an occasional karate studio around town--but these days it seems like every block has a martial arts school dedicated to some discipline that I've never even heard of before. Local karate tournaments have become a rite of passage for many of today's kids. I consider this a good thing: in addition to giving kids strength and athletic skills, the martial arts are also a wonderful way to teach discipline, respect and dedication. With martial arts tournaments, they are even able to bring what they've learned to an exciting competition involving other kids just like them.
