Fine Home Furnishings
Wood CorbelsWood corbels may also be referred to as decorative brackets, and their purpose is elucidated by that moniker. While the functional use of corbels was to provide support to structures while remaining true to the aesthetic of the room, wood corbels are now also used as decorative accents. They can be placed virtually anywhere in a room. Frequently they are placed on the sides of an arch to draw attention to the intricate design of the archway. Wood corbels can be employed in several areas of design. In addition to being adhered to walls for support, they can also be used in furniture. Rather than having the leg of a table join the surface at a right angle, a corbel can be placed over the joint to make it smoother and appear more regal. They can also be used near a fireplace to draw attention to a lovely mantle. Common Designs of Wood CorbelsThough many styles exist, the most common wood corbels feature a detailed scroll design, similar to that used in stringed instruments. Many designs also include flowers, leaves, or shells. Since many wood corbels are hand carved, if you have a particular design in mind, you may be able to find a skilled craftsman that can fashion it for you. The intent for which you plan to use the corbels may limit your selection. While some are purely decorative, others feature a small shelf on which objects can be placed. Also, some wood corbels are shaped to fit into corners, featuring two flat sides that meet at a right angle, while others simply have a flat back. When purchasing wood corbels, you need to know where you plan to place them as you do not want to buy them only to find that you cannot use them as you wished. You should also be sure that they are sanded so that you will not have to do that yourself. ![]() Get all Home Decor articles via
