Crown Molding

by Serena Berger

There are some important things to keep in mind when you are installing crown molding. First and foremost, as with any decorating project, you should plan ahead. Before you begin, be sure that you have a plan for the layout already in place. This will prevent you from wasting not only your time, but also your money. If you rushed into things, you may find that you need to order extra supplies later on because you wasted too much of your materials.

Crown molding is available in a variety of styles. Some of these are rather simple, but others are reminiscent of the architectural styles employed by the Greeks and Romans. If you prefer a different style but want it to still appear traditional, there are other styles that were inspired by the architecture of Colonial America.

Materials from Which Crown Molding Is Made

You should consider the material from which your molding is constructed when deciding from whom to purchase it. Wood crown molding is subject to splintering, cracking and warping. It can also be damaged by insects and potentially water and heat. Plaster crown molding can be very difficult to install because of its weight and frailty.

You might want to consider purchasing crown molding made from polyurethane. Many of the same designs are available and you are much less likely to encounter problems installing it or caring for it. Like wood and plaster crown molding, you can also paint polyurethane crown molding so that it matches the rest of your design scheme.
