End Tables

by Serena Berger

End tables are usually positioned on opposite ends of a sofa, essentially creating a frame in which the sofa sits. End tables can feature drawers or cabinets, providing you with additional storage space. Alternatively, they can be as simple as round tabletops that provide a surface next to your sofa for a beverage or magazine.

You should take care to match the aesthetics of your furniture with your tables. It may be as simple as making sure certain pieces are not much more casual than others. For example, a comfortable sofa with large, soft cushions may not fit in well with a dainty end table. In this case, the sofa may overwhelm the end tables and create an imbalance.

You can find end tables made in a variety of woods, each of which has its own character. For example, mahogany is a dark wood that appears more formal and conveys a sense of gravitas. Light or medium colored woods, on the other hand, may not appear as severe and may be more appropriate when used with a casual design scheme.

End Table Aesthetics

If you have gone through the painstaking task of carefully selecting furniture, the last thing that you want to do is risk damaging it. Since end tables are commonly used as a surface on which to place drinks, you should be sure to have enough coasters to accommodate the number of guests who are in your home. If you do not want to worry about coasters, you can purchase a glass sheet to put on the surface of the table. This will protect it while still allowing everyone to see the beauty of its surface.
