Home Lighting

Lighting is one of the most powerful ways of defining your space. You can use lighting to energize you, to help you relax, to create a mood of romance, or an environment for intense work or study. The lighting fixtures themselves should also be beautiful pieces of your design scheme even when they are not lit, as that is at least half of the day.

There are many things to consider when trying to make your lighting perfect. At what height will your lighting fixtures be place? What kind of shades or bulbs will they have? How will they be angled? How will they be combined with other lighting fixtures in the same room for an overall effect?

Options in Home Lighting

After all, if you are planning on using the overhead lighting that came with your home or apartment any time you need bright ambient light, you can then play with beautiful fixtures that provide less illumination. Sconces or hurricane lamps can be used to highlight certain objects or architectural features in your room, but will not be required for reading or working light. You can ultimately have two thoroughly different lighting designs for your room, depending on who is there and what they are doing.

People often talk of "hard" or "soft" lighting. Soft lighting refers to light that is diffused through a shade, through crystals, or some other exterior feature on the lamp. It is more relaxing--but taken to an extreme, can be rather dull. Hard light is not diffused and in extreme can make a room seem unwelcoming. Used carefully or directed at particular elements of the room or the decoration, however, hard light creates texture and showcases your most beautiful objects of art or architectural features.
