Save On Electric BillsThere's nothing worse than getting an electrical bill that (pun fully intended) knocks your lights out. Energy costs seem to be rising constantly, and with all the appliances plugged in your home it's hard to keep the bill down to a level where you don't have to sweat when you write the check. There are a few simple things you can do, however, that will make a surprising dent in your monthly electricity costs. Tips for Saving on Electric BillsThe vast majority of the electricity used in your home goes toward powering your major appliances. Things like air conditioners, refrigerators and washer/driers are very expensive to run. For this reason, they are the first place you should look when trying to cut electricity costs. Even if you have a newer refrigerator, you should take certain precautions to make sure it's not working too hard to keep your food cold. First of all, keep it at least a few inches away from the wall. This gives it breathing room, allowing it to release heat quickly so the compressor can work as efficiently as possible. You should also try to keep the door closed as much as possible, even if this means rearranging food in the fridge so you can get to things quickly and easily. Unless you can't live without your air conditioning, consider using fans as a substitute whenever possible. Running fans in multiple rooms still costs only a fraction of what it costs to keep your air conditioning going. The best thing about them is you can turn them on only when you're in the room, and shut them off when you leave to save electricity. ![]() Get all Peripherals articles via
