Master Clock Systems

by Mark Sanfilippo

Most people probably don't think about it, but large institutions like schools and hospitals require a plethora of wall clocks that are each set to exactly the same time. This doesn't usually happen by accident. There are what are called master time clocks that make sure that all of the smaller clocks are working in perfect unison.

Master clocks generally consist of a "brain" unit that may or may not have computer interface capabilities. These master clocks then coordinate a series of secondary clocks. Some of the better master clocks can even adjust automatically for daylight savings time changes and some can even coordinate bells or alarms.

There are some great forward-thinking companies that are even doing away with the standard bulky physical master clock systems. They are achieving this by having a PC-based master clock system that simply plugs into any open serial port on your computer. They can synchronize analog and digital clocks, set buzzers and alarms and utilize simple software-based programming.

Don't Forget the Signal Devices

Once you have a good standard master clock or PC based master clock system, don't forget that you need to have signal devices. The term "signal devices" refers to the bells and horns that the master clocks are set to activate. You can find master clocks, both physical and PC based, and a variety of signal devices online at good time clock retailers. If you have questions about compatibility, don't hesitate to contact the retailer. They should be able to walk you through any questions or concerns you might have about either master clocks or signal devices.
