Smart Homes

by Stephanie Dula

Technologists and consumers alike have long dreamed about smart homes that can wake up occupants in the morning, prepare meals, and perform menial household tasks. Home automation technology, however, has been slow to be fully streamlined or inexpensive enough to be a reality for most consumers. The past few years have seen a true competition emerge for control of the home automation market, with many new and affordable products now available.

Adding some form of smart home technology is often desirable for those building a new house or office. Creating a more interactive space is seen as a good way to increase the value of one's home. After all, smart homes are often equipped with remote controlled lighting and appliances that provide an extra level of protection against intrusion, fires, and even household gas and water leaks.

The Security of Smart Homes

The homeowners insurance industry is well aware that some simple home automation components can go a long way towards preventing disasters. A system of well-placed motion detectors, remote controlled lighting or security cameras may result in lower home insurance premiums in some states. The idea is to prevent the damage or intrusion before it happens and provide some level of peace of mind for homeowners.

There are plenty of resources on the Internet that can help buyers choose the right smart home technology for their house or office. While many people decide to have dedicated wires installed during the construction phase, there are plenty of options for retrofitting. Smart home technology provides greater utility and convenience for living and workspaces.
