By now, most people know about the benefits of having an air purifier in their homes. Indoor air pollution can actually be worse than outdoor air pollution. This is caused by common issues: mold, dust mites, a pet's dander, or pollen. And besides being hazardous to your health, these pollutants can also assault your nose by causing unpleasant odors. Holmes manufactures different kinds of air filters for use in its air purifiers to help combat these problems.

Allergy and asthma sufferers are often recommended to use HEPA filters. But what exactly do they do? HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. To be classified as a HEPA filter, said filter must be able to remove 99.97 percent of airborne particulates that are 0.3 microns in size. HEPA filters were actually invented in the 1940s to filter radioactive material in connection to the atomic bomb.

Another common type of filter is the carbon filter. These filters use the absorption power of carbon to remove odors from the air. There are a lot of scented home products available today to make the air smell "fresh and clean" by covering odors up with perfume. This is not a practical option for those with allergies. With a carbon filter, on the other hand, the odors are simply eliminated from the air altogether.

The most advanced filter in the world won't work very well if it's old and clogged. Holmes air filters should be changed at least once per year. You can find them where Holmes air purifiers are sold, either in small appliance shops or on the Internet.
