Makena Maui

by Sierra Rein

Makena, Maui, is one of several resort communities on the south side of the island. The city faces the western waters and is basically the last stop on the road south. Beyond Makena lies rugged, undeveloped country land with a winding dirt road that runs by the Oneloa beach. The beach itself is 3,000 feet long by 100 feet wide.

Ever since French explorer Jean-Francois de Galaup first set foot on the shores of Makena in 1786, the entire western world has known of the beauty of the area. Fifty years later, Makena became the hub of a sugar plantation, featuring the Rose Ranch, and was a favorite recreational spot for reigning King David Kalakaua. Herds of cattle were also taken down from the footlands of Haleakala to the Makena pier to be transported by boat to the Honolulu markets.

Makena Maui Today

Although the Rose Ranch has since become the Ulupalakua Ranch, the same pioneering spirit has not left Makena. There are many opportunities for adventurous tours, horseback rides, scuba and snorkeling trips to underwater caves, and kayaking. However, there are also a number of high-class, luxury resorts to sit back and relax in as well.

Makena is filled with beachfront condominiums and houses, expensive resort-style hotels, and a number of golf courses, spas, and swimming pools. Weddings are often held on the sandy shores, while sea turtle and whale watchers visually comb the Makena Beach State Park for exciting new sightings. It is no wonder why Makena Maui is one of the hottest vacation, residential, and retirement areas on the island.
