King Salmon Fishing

by Jared Vincenti

Named both for its large size and outstanding flavor, the King Salmon is the favorite catch of fishermen who want an excellent dinner to bring home. Also called the Chinook, the Quinnat, or the Spring Salmon, the King Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) is generally the most expensive salmon at market. Out of all species of salmon, King Salmon meat is known for its flavor, texture, and high levels of omega-3 fatty acids and other nutritional benefits.

The King of Sport Fishing
King Salmon are among the most popular salmon to be sought by sportsfishing vacationers. They are plentiful, widely-dispersed, and comparatively easy to catch. Despite their massive size, King Salmon are much easier to land than other species like the Silver Salmon, and as such are preferred by novice fishermen.

King Salmon are found in nearly all rivers in Alaska, and are known for being the longest-travelling species of salmon. A single King Salmon may travel hundreds or even thousands of miles inland to spawn, so King Salmon can be caught in waters very far from the ocean. In addition, the young live in freshwater for a long time before returning to sea--up to seven years!

Finally, most chefs will tell you that King Salmon are the best tasting type of salmon, whether grilled, smoked, or made into lox. If you are planning a sporty vacation to Alaska, fishing for King Salmon is a great chance to land a great meal fresh from the river. Even if you don't catch your own--be sure to try the excellent meat these giant fish have to offer.
