Salmon Fishing Tips

by Jared Vincenti

Salmon fishing is a sport that requires a deceptively high level of skill. Many a first time fisher has been aggravated by his inability to catch one of the hundreds of salmon he can see swimming past. Although there are many fish swimming upstream, they are on a mission to spawn and die, and it takes some effort on a fisherman's part to distract them.

Getting and Keeping a Salmon's Attention
Since salmon are nearing the end of their lifespan, they are far less motivated by food than they are when younger. Most fishing techniques rely on tricking a fish into biting your hook by disguising it as something tasty to the fish. This approach is far less effective when catching salmon, so it takes more patience to get a bite.

Once the fish bites, you will realize just how strong a salmon actually is. All types of salmon are powerful swimmers, and a determined salmon can easily break your line. There are many tricks to tire the fish so that you can reel it in, and most of these are best taught by a pro.

Finally, the best thing you can do is to bring someone along who knows what he or she is doing. Salmon fishing is a tricky business, and can be nearly impossible to learn yourself. Invite a friend or hire an instructor to show you the proper ways to bait and land your salmon, and learn just how much of a difference technique makes.
