Glycolic Acid

by Blaire Chandler-Wilcox

Many skin care experts, including top-of-the-line dermatologists, contend that glycolic acid is the best answer available for acne prone skin. Glycolic acids effectively clear clogged pores, resulting in clearer, cleaner skin. Glycolic acids are also considered effective in evening out skin tone, removing age-spots and treating dry skin in general.

Glycolic Acid: Skin's Quicker Picker Upper

Glycolic acid is one of the famous fruit acids, known professionally as AHAs. Glycolic acids are considered the most beneficial for facial skin repair because their molecular structure is small enough to allow for for maximum skin penetration. Glycolic acids essentially break down the pollutants and undesirable materials in and on the skin. The result is cleaner, tighter pores and noticeable skin lightening.

There are over 200 manufacturers selling high potency glycolic acid formulations. Many products online claim to have percentages as high as seventy percent. However, when buying glycolic acid products, dermatologists and skin experts agree that consumers should stick to products featuring glycolic acid in 10 to 12 percent solutions. A higher percentage can actually damage the skin and should only be applied by professional dermatologists.

One of the reasons that glycolic acids are so effective is because they are essentially performing a micro-exfoliation with every use. Users should bear in mind that overzealous exfoliation can, ironically, lead to damaged skin. Glycolic acids are effective, and so should be treated with respect. Consult your dermatologist to confirm you're using them wisely.
