Typically, they are not at all selective about the material they will publish, and they will basically publish any manuscript for a price. Consequently, vanity publishers have a bad reputation, and books produced in this way will carry a stigma. Additionally, there are a number of vanity presses that operate unethically and will scam writers out of their money.

Self publishing companies are the final option for most authors. Self publishing companies are very straightforward. They will produce a book for a price, and the writer will maintain the rights to the book and be responsible for all of the marketing. Many writers prefer self publishing because they maintain the rights to their books. They also offer copy editing, design, and marketing services for an additional cost. These self publishing companies are more reputable than vanity press publishers and can be very flexible while still giving you online and bookstore distribution.
