Car Donations
Car Donation TipsMany people want to donate a car, truck, or recreational vehicle to one of their favorite charities but are unsure of how to go about it. The process is actually quite simple and more charities are now better situated to accept and process such bulky donations. With the donations of such vehicles comes the need to legally transfer ownership and title, the need to transport the vehicle to the appropriate storage facility, and the need to convert the asset into cash. The best thing you can do to make it easier on your chosen charitable organization is to make sure the vehicle is in the best possible condition so that they are able to realize the most benefit from it. If your car requires a few minor repairs or some cosmetic enhancements, consider taking care of them before donating it. The better condition your car is in, the more money the charity will receive for it at auction, and many charities do not have the extra time or money to make such repairs. You will also want to be sure that the car's paperwork is in order, as well. Charities cannot accept the donation of cars without the proper title which you will need to sign over to them upon donation. You should also send the documented repair history of the car if you have it. Such documentation can greatly enhance the value of a car in an auction environment. It lets potential buyers know the probable condition of the car and can boost the charity's net profit from the sale. Research Your Charity's Procedure for Accepting a Car DonationA great many charities use professional transportation and processing companies to handle the transporting (and possibly the selling) of donated vehicles. See if your charity uses one and, if so, do some research into the fees they will charge the charity and whether they have been accused of shady dealings. Most such companies are reputable and operate in the spirit of helping charities realize the most gain from donations but there are always a few bad eggs around. ![]() Get all Auto Donation articles via
