ESPN The Magazine SubscriptionsESPN the Magazine launched in March of 1998, poised and ready to take on the Grandad of Sports Journalism, Sports Illustrated. In order to differentiate themselves from the venerable publication, ESPN the Magazine opted for a much larger magazine size (10 x 12 inches), heavier use of photography, shorter articles, and a more irreverent tone. Critics are mixed on the end result. ESPN: The MagFans of the magazine appreciate its affordability. Without question, ESPN the Magazine is one of the most affordable news-magazines on the stands today. But some critics say "you get what you pay for." On the other hand, it features the writing of some of the most popular anchors on the network, including Chris Berman, John Clayton, and Stuart Scott. Plus, several of the most popular American athletes are always happy to be interviewed by ESPN, the network and the magazine, because it is the sporting network of choice among professional athletes themselves. When athletes speak to ESPN, they know they're going to be observed by their peers. Unfortunately, the magazine is viewed by many as little more than an addendum to the network. It relies heavily on "coming attractions" in the world of sports, leaving "the week in review" articles to Sports Illustrated. Further, the magazine is long on photos, but short on articles, leaving those who enjoy in-depth post-game analysis empty handed. Nonetheless, if you're a fan of over-sized, great photographs, complete with pithy quotes and at-a-glance snapshot info, then it's possible that ESPN the Magazine will provide you with just the kind of coverage you're looking for. ![]() Get all Magazines articles via
