Costs Of HIPAA

by Dina Kayed

Since 1996, profound changes have taken place in medical health facilities across the United States. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was introduced by the Clinton Administration in an attempt to stop patient privacy violations and injustices in the health insurance system. When correctly implemented, HIPAA regulations can also often aid people seeking health insurance with pre-existing illnesses, and it can make health coverage more "portable."

Healthcare facilities must make many changes and meet a long list of requirements in order to fully comply with the standards of HIPAA regulations. The process of implementation can be very costly and time-consuming. Making changes in each separate part of the system requires special knowledge and training. In addition, a separate budget is typically required, along with outside evaluation.

Economical Healthcare Modifications

According to HIPAA regulations, only approved personnel are permitted to have access to patients' private information. For this purpose, they are required to be properly qualified and trained. This often means sending staff to attend special courses for HIPAA training. The cost of training is high, and can represent a significant outlay for a large healthcare facility.

Software is another considerable expense. Medical and health institutions are now required by law to employ HIPAA-compliant electronic documentation systems. Online security breaches are a significant risk when it comes to confidentiality. Programs are constantly being updated to address new security issues. The ongoing effort to maintain security can be expensive.

Seeking third-party help in the process may appear at first glance to be simply an additional expense. However, to apply HIPAA regulations requires expertise and experience, and the right consultant can actually help to save money in the long run, because they provide you with a solid and efficient plan, which means no money is being wasted.
