Nowhere may proper health insurance and medical security be more critical than in the case of children. After all, children are far more injury-prone than adults, due to their heightened level of physical activity. In addition, children are more susceptible to illness, because their immune systems are not as strong. As a result, it is particularly important that parents or guardians make every effort to protect their children with the highest level of medical security possible.

Of course, medical security means more than the assurance that a child will receive proper treatment should she need it. It also extends to the security of medical information associated with a child's care. And under HIPAA's regulations, that security is more easily obtained and protected than ever before.

Medical Security for Children

HIPAA's regulations, which provide individuals significantly greater control over information surrounding their own healthcare decisions, provide parents and guardians with similar rights surrounding their children's healthcare, as well. With a small number of clearly delineated exceptions, parents and guardians are considered the gatekeepers to their children's protected health information access.

Working in tandem, a robust healthcare plan and HIPAA's privacy protections can provide a child a safety net stronger than that afforded to children of past generations. It is therefore more important than ever that parents understand their expanded range of options and rights. Fortunately, both the government and private organizations have made it a priority to make such information available, on and offline.
