Deciding which carpet to buy depends on both the look you want and the type of material that best suits the room you want to do. Let's take a look at some different types of carpets and what the benefits are of each kind.

Varieties of Carpet

Most residential carpet is made from one of three different synthetic materials: olefin, nylon or polyester. Olefin is the hardiest material, and works best in areas with a lot of traffic. It is stain resistant and can be cleaned very easily. On the other hand, it's not as soft and luxurious as other types of carpet.

Nylon is the usually the most expensive type of carpet, and it works well in both high and low traffic areas. Polyester is cheaper and very easy to clean, and it also is good in high traffic areas. Aside from these three materials, you will also find carpet made out of wool or acrylic, which are both substantially softer (and more expensive) than olefin, nylon and polyester.

Carpets are also categorized by their "cut," or the way the individual fibers are made. Loop pile carpet refers to carpet that is made up of thousands of tiny yarn loops. Cut pile, on the other hand, features loops that have been cut on the top. Frieze carpets have twisted yarns that give the carpet a lot of texture and a more informal look than the other styles.
