How It Works

A normal penis contains three major chambers which fill with blood during an erection. These are the Corpora cavernousa (2) and the Corpus Spongiosum. The glands, the tip of the penis, changes in size accordingly with the penis during erection. These three chambers are made up of smooth muscle and blood vessels and are surrounded by thin ligaments that prevent over distention of the penis. Fibrous extensions of these ligaments create a sheet that surrounds the penis and its chambers and controls the "stiffness" of erection when distended.

Under normal, non-aroused conditions, the penile chambers are open and allow for the flow of blood through the filling chambers. When a person becomes sexually aroused, the chambers remain open and the exit gates close. When the exit gates close the blood that remains in the penis creates an erection. Thus, penile size and erection strength are limited by two main factors--penile chamber size and the extent to which the surrounding fibrous sheets can be stretched.
