Natural PMS Herbal RemediesPremenstrual Syndrome, commonly referred to as PMS, classifies a group of physical and emotional symptoms that some women experience during their menstrual cycle. Although the symptoms usually cease once the menstrual period begins, in some women, symptoms may last through and after their periods. Not all women experience PMS, but premenstrual emotional and physical changes occur in nearly 80 percent of menstruating women. The cause of premenstrual syndrome is unclear and there is no test available to diagnosis the condition, though tests may be used to rule out other conditions. A combination of physiological, genetic, nutritional, and behavioral factors likely contribute to the occurrence of PMS. Symptoms of PMSThere are estimated to be more than 150 symptoms associated with PMS. The symptoms vary from woman to woman and from cycle to cycle. Their intensity ranges from mild to debilitating, with about two to five percent of women experiencing symptoms so severe that they significantly disable them from continuing with normal life functions and routines. Physical symptoms may include headache, migraine, fluid retention, fatigue, constipation, painful joints, backache, abdominal cramping, heart palpitations and weight gain. Emotional and behavioral changes may include anxiety, depression, irritability, panic attacks, tension, lack of coordination, decreased work or social performance and altered libido. Easing Symptoms With HerbsIn addition to treatment through increased exercise, nutritional changes and stress reduction, there are a number of products available that may aid in alleviating the physical and emotional symptoms of PMS. The key to supplements is finding a product that contributes to overall health while regulating female hormones, creating a balance in levels of estrogen and progesterone and managing the symptoms associated with the condition. Supplements commonly come in pill/capsule form but there are also a number of creams on the market that combine herbal extracts and essential oils to provide relief from PMS. ![]() Get all Supplements articles via
