Whole Body Cleanses

by Emily Ledbetter

The foods common in most North American's diets are loaded with harmful products including chemical preservatives, pesticides and environmental pollutants that inhibit the efficient functioning of the body. We are also exposed to toxins and chemicals on a daily basis at work, in the home, through the air we breathe, the water supply and through the use of pharmaceutical drugs. These toxins lead to poor digestion, constipation, toxic colon build-up, weight gain and low energy. While the initial symptoms are often just an inconvenience, they commonly lead to long-term health problems and serious disease. Periodic cleansing and detoxification of the internal system helps to remove these unwanted substances and alleviates the stress they place on the body.

Intestinal health is the foundation for a healthy and well-functioning body. However, many people do not regard cleansing their insides as part of their general health routine. They may brush and floss each day, take a multi-vitamin and other supplements, exercise and consume a relatively healthy diet and believe that they have done everything necessary to maintain optimal health. This is where they are wrong--a person's insides, especially the colon which functions as the "sewer system" of our body, also require regular cleaning.

Benefits of Cleansing

Constipation, parasites, IBS, gas, bloating, stomach pain, chronic fatigue and digestive problems can all result from a toxic colon. In addition to protecting against those conditions, regular cleansing and detoxifying also has the following benefits:
• Re-populate the colon with "good" bacteria.
• Promote the discharge of bile.
• Quickly evacuate the contents of the colon in case of an acute illness such as headache, infectious disease or constipation.
• Promote healing of bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis and Chron's disease.
• Combat chronic constipation.
• Remove heavy metals from intestinal walls and kill intestinal parasites.

There are a number of natural products on the market that aid in the whole body cleansing process. It is also important to make dietary and lifestyle changes to promote long-term intestinal health. Avoidance of chemicals, from food or other sources, refined food, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, tobacco and drugs helps minimize the toxin load.
