Walking On A Treadmill

by Beth Hrusch

Walking is an excellent low-impact way to get cardio exercise with no strain on the body. Brisk walking on a treadmill combines the benefits of outdoor walking with the ease and convenience of a high-tech indoor workout. Today's treadmills have features that help you get more out of each workout session. You can burn as many calories on a treadmill without being at the mercy of the weather.

Treadmill Walking All Year Round

In good weather, and on a safe road or path, outdoor walking can be an enjoyable experience. But what happens when the weather won't allow a good outside walk? Being cooped up inside does not necessarily mean that exercise must cease. When you own a treadmill, walking becomes a year-long activity that gains the benefit of help from a programmable piece of equipment designed to make workouts more effective.

When you are walking outside, are you aware of your heart rate, how many calories you are burning or how many miles you have walked? Knowing this can help you know how far you can go in a day and when you should quit. It helps you track your progress, as well. A treadmill can provide this information on a console to give you a more beneficial workout. A cushioned deck absorbs impact for a more comfortable experience.

A typical outdoor walk will certainly burn calories and strengthen the heart. However, walking on a treadmill enhances the benefits of this exercise by adding features to the workout that will make it easier and more fun. Treadmills can be used either at home or at a gym, if you need the motivation of a group setting. Either way, they provide all of the heart-pumping aerobic exercise necessary for cardiovascular health without the disadvantages of outdoor walking.
