Benefits Of Incorporating

by Kevin Little

The benefits of incorporating a business are many. Despite this fact, many small business owners fail to take advantage of such benefits and often wind up paying more than is needed in taxes and health insurance benefits. While the decision to incorporate is a personal one, those in the small business world should look very closely the then benefits and procedures involved in such a process. Few companies are "too small" to qualify for corporate status.

The benefits of incorporating are often seen during tax season. One of the banes of the self-employed worker is the self-employment tax, which includes (among other things) contributions to Social Security and Medicare. The self-employed find themselves "double-taxed," as they must pay not only employee taxes, but employer taxes as well. Such taxes can be avoided when one incorporates as an S-Corporation. S-Corps are taxed only once for these benefits due to their unique structure.

Another benefit provides savings in a less direct--but no less important--manner. Corporations are considered separate from those who run them. This means that any liability is a matter dealing with the corporation--not the owner of said corporation. This distinction allows small business owners to protect their personal property in the course of running a business.

Reaping the Benefits of Incorporating

Many small business owners simply don't feel that they have the time or the expertise to incorporate their companies. Many such businesspeople have found it incredibly useful to work with a registered agent in the state in which they plan to incorporate. Such a strategy is a wise move, due especially to the fact that many states (such as Delaware) require businesses to work with such an agent. Registered agents can help businesses to become corporations and help businesspeople deal with the IRS requirements and paperwork that arise when running a corporation.
