Business Tax Savings

by Kevin Little

Business tax savings are a primary consideration for any kind of company. Taxes are a fact of life in the business world, as in any aspect of life. Businesses, however, can reduce the amount of their taxes with wise planning and considered business strategies.

One of the best ways for any business (in particular a small business) to reduce the tax burden is to incorporate. Self-employed people and un-incorporated businesses must often pay more in taxes than their incorporated brethren. The amount of tax savings one can realize is often due in part to the state in which a given business is incorporated.

Business Tax Savings in Delaware

Delaware corporations pay lower taxes than many businesses incorporated in other states. This may seem to be an interesting but irrelevant piece of information--great for corporations located in Delaware, but inconsequential for businesses located elsewhere. Businesses, however, are not required to incorporate in the state in which they are located. Delaware's state laws are very favorable for businesses headquartered anywhere in the country. Delaware regulations allow companies from outside of the state to incorporate in Delaware and, in so doing, garner significant business tax savings.

Businesses gain immediate savings when they incorporate in Delaware, due to the low costs of initial incorporation. Annual fees for incorporation in Delaware are also lower than in many other states. Delaware corporations can be set up as S-Corporations, which saves businesses from being "double-taxed" on Social Security, Medicaid and other taxes. There is a reason that a majority of NYSE corporations are incorporated in Delaware.
