Sports Supplements

by Kimberly Clark

Sports supplements are products that are taken by athletes to improve their physical performance. Pills, powders and even under-the-tongue sprays are just some of the different forms these types of products are sold in. A large number of these products are made from all-natural ingredients, but there are some that are produced from man-made or synthetic components.

The majority of sports supplements promise to help by either raising the consumer's energy levels or increasing his muscle mass. Many also claim to have the ability to build stamina. Then there are those sports supplements that are taken primarily to promote weight loss.

No matter what reason sports supplements are taken, the real issue remains whether or not these products can actually enhance an athlete's performance. Depending on the active ingredients contained in the supplement, studies have shown that moderate gains can be realized. Of course, nothing beats the persistence of determination and hard work.

The Safety of Sports Supplements

The safety of sports supplements is the other big idea to keep in mind when contemplating whether you should take them. It is important to remember that most sports supplements are not regulated by the FDA. Even so, there have been several sports supplements that have been pulled from the shelves and banned from professional competitions because of the adverse effects they have had on people. Before purchasing a supplement, be sure to find out what sort of tests it has undergone.
