Increase Metabolism

by Kimberly Clark

Your metabolism is the rate at which your body converts food to energy. Each one of us has what is called a basal metabolic rate (BMR), which is defined as the rate of metabolism when a person is at rest. The energy expended during this phase is only used for maintaining vital organs such as the heart, lungs, nervous system, and kidneys.

The resting metabolic rate varies from person to person. In essence, this means that people with higher metabolisms can eat more without gaining weight. Genetics plays a large part in just how fast your metabolism will be.

Armed with this knowledge, physicians and those in the health and fitness field have set out to devise ways to increase the metabolic rate of people looking to lose weight. As a result, several prescription drugs and over-the-counter products have been developed that promise to aid people in burning calories more quickly. However, before you decide to take a supplement, there are a few things you can do on your own to increase your metabolic rate.

Increase Your Metabolic Rate

The first thing you have to do to increase your metabolic rate is lower the number of calories you take in each day. Keep in mind that on average, people need about 1,200 calories per day to sustain life; your daily calorie intake should never drop below this level. Eating breakfast, snacking frequently and exercising are other things that you can do to increase your metabolism. If these steps don't do enough, then you can look into adding a metabolism-increasing supplement to your diet.
