Risk Assessment

by Adam Blau

The topic of risk assessment is a vast and diverse one. When referring to an individual's risk assessment, more often than not, the question becomes one of how prone the person is to health dangers. Other times, discussions of risk assessment deal with the potential hazards in a workplace or other communal environment.

For individuals, health risk assessment is based on a number of factors. First of all, it is important to gauge a person's family history. Many instances of heart disease or cancer-related illnesses are tied in with heredity. By examining a person's family history, one can get a better understanding of how "at risk" the person is for similar conditions.

Another obvious determinant of risk is the individual's personal history. By examining symptomatic patterns in a person's health history (both physical and mental), it is possible to better determine how at risk he or she may be for related conditions. Sometimes, more serious conditions manifest themselves at an early stage as smaller, seemingly less threatening symptoms.

Reasons to Be Concerned about Your Own Risk Assessment

There are several reasons why you might be concerned about your own personal health risk assessment. First of all, you will obviously want to be aware of any potentially preventable issues that might befall you in the future. Secondly, insurance companies will frequently use risk assessment profiles to determine rates and insurability. Risk assessment is both a useful tool for companies and a welcome device for individuals looking to prevent future health problems that they might encounter.
