Turbo Timers

by Adam Lee

For racing enthusiasts, turbocharging is code for extra speed and acceleration. One downfall to turbocharging is overheating. If the turbocharger is not properly cooled, the oil that lubricated the center cartridge will heat up and begin to solidify in a process known as "coking." "Coking" is the number one cause of turbo failure. A turbo timer will allow your engine to idle for a time after the key has been turned off and removed. This allows the oil to cool for a time without "coking."

Add Life to Your Oil and Engine With a Turbo Timer

Preventing oil "coking" is an important step in adding life to your engine and preventing expensive and unnecessary maintenance. As "coking" is the number one cause of turbo failure, it is also important to remember that the oil cooling your turbocharger is the same oil lubricating your engine. The same "coked" oil causing turbo failure could also cause major engine damage.

Turbo timers are a great way to add life not only to your turbocharger, but your engine as well. Once the key is removed from the ignition, the timer allows oil to circulate throughout your engine system, cooling your turbocharger and preventing "coking." This small investment could potentially save you thousands of dollars.

Turbo timers generally come with a full range of monitoring and measurement tools in addition to their primary function. Some turbo timers can be set to display vehicle speed and revolutions per minute. Some timers also feature a speed warning level. More advanced models may be set as a shift indicator. Regardless of the features you choose, a turbo timer could be an important addition in your fight against engine wear.
