Blow-Off Valves

by Adam Lee

Turbochargers are an important upgrade for any racing enthusiast. Turbocharger systems are complex and can be upgraded in order to deal with many additional issues they raise. One of these issues is backspin. Backspin, or compressor surge, is caused when pressure builds up in the compressor housing, causing the turbo impeller blade to slow, stop, or even worse, to spin backwards. This backspin can be potentially damaging to the turbine wheel and shaft, which over time can cause huge amounts of damage to the turbo system, ultimately leading to turbo failure.

Adding Life to Turbo Systems With a Blow-Off Valve

The purpose of a blow-off valve is to release built up pressure in the compressor housing into the atmosphere, significantly reducing the likelihood of backspin. Blow-off valves are activated by high pressure, ensuring quick valve response. Being actuated by high pressure only also ensures complete valve closure while in an idle state.

High performance blow-off valves are designed to reduce pressure without reducing compressor speed. A dual drive blow-off valve featuring a small port for low boost and a larger port for higher boost ensures maximum response to all types of pressure situations. Many high performance blow-off valves are also tension adjustable.

Other things to look for in a quality blow-off valve include a urethane gasket to ensure a tight seal and a hard spring for high boost applications. A proper blow-off valve suited for high performance turbochargers will improve performance and response. Not only that, a blow-off valve will also add a great deal of life to the turbocharger by eliminating the threat of backspin.
