Turbo Upgrades

by Adam Lee

One of the most popular ways to enhance power performance on the street or on the track is a turbocharger upgrade. One might enquire into the difference between turbochargers and superchargers. The difference is subtle but important. Both increase the air intake of the engine, which enhances peak performance power, but by entirely different methods. Superchargers use a belt attached to the crankshaft of the engine, whereas turbochargers utilize the excess pressures of the exhaust system that would otherwise be expended into the atmosphere. This utilization of existent gas energy gives turbochargers an advantage over the mechanical production of energy produced by a supercharger.

Upgrading to a Turbo System

The advantages of a turbo system are numerous. First of all, the turbo system produces more power per pound of intake pressure by using preexisting gases instead of robbing the engine of power directly from the crankshaft. The turbocharged engine can be preset to a number of power outputs from the push of a button, and inasmuch can meet a variety of driving situations on the fly. Turbo systems require no replacement, adjustment, or replacement of belts or pulleys while offering a much higher power potential. Turbo systems are also easily installed, especially on four cylinder engines.

The turbocharger basically uses existent exhaust gases to increase air volume flowing into the engine through a turbine to create greater breathing ability and flow dynamics for increased engine performance. The turbo is mounted to the exhaust manifold and induces gases into a compressor turbine shaft. The other side of this shaft is attached to the air filter that pulls air into the intake manifold. This, in effect, utilizes exhaust gases to pull and compress greater volumes of ambient air into the intake manifold, which increases performance.

In short, a turbo system is an easy to install addition to any high performance automobile that will provide the added kick the speed enthusiast craves. By using existing pressures, a turbo system is far more efficient than the mechanical action of supercharger systems, giving turbo a significant advantage. The ease of installation will provide the novice enthusiast a challenge without too much frustration, and can provide a boost in power to satisfy even the biggest speed freak.
