Funeral Homes

by Gina Carroll

The services that funeral homes provide take the bereaved family all the way through the process of honoring and burying their loved one. Typically, a funeral home has a casket selection room, a preparation room, a chapel and a viewing room. The funeral home is designed to put the bereaved at ease as they are interviewed and taken though the different burial choices and planning exercises. Often the funeral home has a room that is arranged to resemble a comfortable living room for this purpose.

Funeral homes usually have a hearse, a flower car and limousine. They have ongoing relationships with outside vendors for goods and services. They offer caskets, urns and other products for purchase.

Whether a person comes for funeral pre-planning or for an immediate need, the funeral home will help them arrange the details and tend to the logistics of the funeral or other disposition. The funeral home sees to the coordination of the clergyman and pall bearers and any other persons who will take part in the service. They arrange times and places for the various services. They transport the body from the place of death and do the embalming, and the body preparation.

Some Funeral Homes Have Their Own Crematories

Some funeral homes have crematories, so that they can process cremations. This makes them a full-service facility. If they do not have their own crematory, they transport the body to another crematory facility.
