Burial CostsThe average unsuspecting consumer may be surprised at the numerous costs associated with burial. During the difficult time after the death of a loved one, the bereaved might be tempted to hand over all of the decision-making to a funeral director and not focus on costs. However desirable this may seem, it is not prudent. Funeral Directors are required by law to itemize all burial costs. This list of services will vary depending of the kind of services the customer chooses. The list would include a basic service fee for the funeral director and staff. This fee would cover all of the funeral planning; coordinating the services with burial providers like the cemetery or crematory; completing any permits and securing death certificates; and preparing the notices. In addition, the customer might choose the following services: embalming, viewing at funeral home, limousine and other vehicles, equipment at graveside service, casket and burial clothing. In addition, there are fees and costs incurred from outside vendors that the funeral home will pass through to the customer. These include: obituary notices, clergy, musicians and flowers. The funeral home may add a service charge to the fees and costs that they must advance on behalf of the customer. Charges beyond the Funeral HomeBeyond the funeral home, there are charges for the cemetery plot, opening and closing of the grave, headstone or grave marker, crematory fees, vault and urn. The incidental costs associated with the burial would include such items as traveling costs and acknowledgment stationary. In all, the burial is a considerable expenditure, especially if the planning is done through a funeral home or similar full-service provider. ![]() Get all Grief articles via
