Cremation Societies

by Gina Carroll

Cremation societies are for profit organizations whose primary purpose is to provide consumers with the service resources to facilitate a meaningful and economical cremation experience. These societies focus on and encourage a proactive pre-planning approach to burial planning. For those who desire to investigate and formulate a plan for their own postmortem disposition, and who are fairly certain that they want to be cremated, the cremation society is thought to provide more economical choices.

In the 1970s, when a surge of interest in cremations occurred, cremation societies appeared to provide comprehensive information about cremation and cremation services. The use of the word "society" in the name tends to engender greater trust and the perception these societies function as a cooperative, which is not necessarily deserved or accurate. This comes from common assumption that cremation societies are the same as memorial societies.

Memorial societies are non-profit organizations that offer a thoroughly researched and compiled array of burial planning information, the use of which is designed to reduce costs. Memorial societies function locally to provide industry surveys, lists and price comparisons, in addition to negotiated discounts for its members.

Cremation Societies: a For-Profit Provider

Cremation societies, on the other hand, compete in the cremation marketplace to provide cremation services for consumers. So in the search for a cremation provider, cremation societies are another option.
