Cemetery Drives

by Gina Carroll

One of the many luxuries of hiring a funeral home is their transportation service. The day of the funeral or memorial service is the most difficult and emotional time for the family of the deceased. In the midst of their mourning, they are required to organize family, greet guests and grieve publicly. It is comforting for them to be relieved of the worry of trying to move their group (which is usually an expanded family unit) from one location to another. Thus, the funeral director takes care of those details.

Traditionally, the group of mourners will proceed in a motorcade from the location of the service (such as the church) to the burial site. The motorcade usually includes the hearse, flower cars, family limousines, and then the privately-owned cars of the guests. If the funeral home director anticipates a large group of travelers, he will arrange a police escort.

If you decide to arrange your own transportation, you can contract a limousine or livery service. Many limousine companies have special funeral rates and offers. A private citizen cannot, however, transport the casket, since there are legal limitations to transporting the deceased.

Arrange Your Own Police Escort

You can even arrange for a police escort on your own behalf. In any city, you would call the police department and inquire about a motorcycle escort for a funeral motorcade. Most city police departments allow their policeman to take funeral escort jobs during their off-hours. Most departments will connect you with those officers.
