Career As A Chef

by Kathleen Gagne

A career as a chef can be as exciting as each person makes it. Learning how to become an expert chef requires basic knowledge of the food service industry as well as expertise in planning and preparing delicious foods every day. He or she must have a solid understanding of cost issues, staff management, and food supply ordering.

Career Chef's Duties and Rewards

A cook in a greasy spoon restaurant might make great burgers and fries or ribs, but he or she will not attain the status of professional chef without the proper credentials. Becoming a professional chef means attending and graduating from a culinary institute and, most likely, obtaining certification from a recognized organization such as the American Culinary Federation (ACF). This allows a chef to gain the stature required to progress from trainee to professional in his or her career.

The main duties of a chef involve producing quality menus and meals and even training others to produce these dishes according to specifications. Generally, the head chef will have some hiring responsibilities, and it can be a great boost to be able to say that a new chef served under a prestigious mentor. Meals must not only taste delicious, but they must also look good on a plate.

Head chefs are also responsible for assuming the most difficult and intricate cooking duties. They stand on their feet during most of their shifts and sometimes work under pressure. One interesting element of becoming a head chef is the opportunity to create new, innovative dishes. Chefs should begin the learning process with a diploma or degree and may be able to move from smaller environments to very prestigious restaurants.
