Chefs make a reasonable salary, generally have some leeway in what they prepare, and can rise from trainee to apprentice to expert in their field. How to Get Started in a Cooking CareerOne of the best paths to a successful career in cooking is to attend a culinary institute. There are hundreds of such schools in the United States, and some cities may offer more than one option. Students who apply to culinary institutes are usually required to have at least a high school diploma or GED, and, depending on their finances, may be eligible for scholarships or financial aid. It is important to decide what type of cooking or cooking position most appeals to the candidate. Chefs like to work in different settings, such as prestigious restaurants or pastry bakeries. Students can specialize in several different fields in the cooking industry, including food service management. While head chefs have a great deal of influence in a kitchen, most chefs must work as part of a team and be able to interact well with others. Graduating from a culinary institute with a diploma, an associate's degree, or a bachelor's degree opens doors for new chefs. Achieving certification from an organization such as the American Culinary Federation (ACF) can also be a significant career booster.
