Certified Master Chefs

As is readily apparent, a Certified Master Chef has attained the highest level of education, skills, experience, and prestige in the food preparation industry. Given that there are approximately fourteen different levels of certification (not all of which are directly related to master chef status), becoming a master chef may take some time and definitely requires a substantial base of knowledge that not all practitioners are able to achieve. At the same time, a Certified Master Chef is highly respected and may command an outstanding salary in a prestigious setting.

How to Become a Certified Master Chef

Even the most impressive career in food preparation usually begins in a kitchen and progresses to course work in a culinary institute. Many major cities have more than one institute from which to choose. Within schools, there are different options for study. The fastest way to graduate is to obtain a diploma that may take anywhere from 12 to 18 months, while some school offer more prestigious associate's and bachelor's degrees in food services.

In order to be accepted into a culinary institute, a candidate is usually required to have either a high school diploma or a GED. Finding a school that also offers some general education courses is a plus. Completing several general courses can provide the student chef with a broader background of basic knowledge as well as more confidence in general.

Once the chef has graduated and, hopefully, has attained some level of American Culinary Federation (ACF) certification, there are additional courses and requirements that the chef must meet in order to progress through the levels of culinary excellence and certification. A Certified Master Chef usually has a lot of options and may, in fact, earn a local, national, or international reputation for culinary excellence.
