Those who have obtained a diploma or degree from an accredited culinary arts institute may think about careers as widely different as working in a baking and pastry venue, working to develop new candies, or even working in an exclusive restaurant. The choices and challenges are virtually endless, and new opportunities continue to expand. Culinary Arts Careers and ChoicesFirst of all, it is important to understand that a career in culinary arts is usually physically demanding. Even top chefs spend a significant portion of their day standing, and they typically work weekends and late nights. At the same time, those who enter the field report a relatively high level of satisfaction with their work. At the top of the "Food Chain," pun intended, are the Master Chefs. They develop and prepare exciting culinary concoctions and are the most highly skilled professionals. Many become famous locally, while others enjoy national or international acclaim for their work. Chefs generally start out as apprentices and earn significantly more money as they gain in experience and attain higher levels of certification. In fact, some restaurants build their entire image around a spectacular chef. Other careers include Executive Chef, private household cooks, and those who own their own restaurants. Still others in the field work in hospitals preparing appropriate foods for those with special dietary needs. Some culinary school graduates work as assistant chefs during the learning process, until they can move up in the ranks.
