Culinary Arts Programs

by Kathleen Gagne

The food industry offers several different opportunities in which to use a culinary arts education. Like other fields, it includes both general and specialized fields of expertise. Chefs can progress through the ranks to become Executive Chefs, for example, or they might choose to pursue the specialization of Pastry Chef or food service buyer or manager.

Culinary Arts Program Choices

There are a number of interesting growth segments in the food service field that a prospective chef might explore. A major one has developed around the travel and tourism industry, with cities like Orlando and Miami showing growth, as increasing numbers of tourists come to town expecting fine cuisine in the top hotels and restaurants. This growth is already creating new jobs and providing new professional opportunities.

For a qualified chef, there are also opportunities that include owning or managing a restaurant, developing airline food options, working with schools or colleges, or becoming the highly-respected chef at a country club. Food service is a people-oriented profession, which offers so many different venues that good chefs can travel and work almost anywhere in the world.

Some chefs choose to go beyond basic training and decide to pursue a hospitality industry certification in any one of several areas. This opens many more doors to the chef who wants to grow professionally, as the need for experienced practitioners in both fields is growing so rapidly. One key to success as a chef is finding the right culinary arts program and exploring the opportunities in a number of areas.
