Culinary Education

by Kathleen Gagne

One way to become a great chef is to attend a culinary school that employs top quality chefs as teachers and mentors for their students. There are many culinary arts institutions in the United States and around the world that invite great chefs to train students. Obviously, this factor can be a major component in obtaining the best possible education in whatever field of culinary art the student wants to pursue.

Culinary Education Options

For prospective chefs who aspire to become the very best in their field, a great educational start is to attend a school that offers a Bachelor of Science degree with a strong general education component. This opportunity offers the student a chance to gain the confidence and poise that comes with a four-year degree, as well as access to the doors that this type of education opens. As the chef grows in his/her profession and seeks to go beyond cooking, the degree will be a huge asset.

For those who love to cook and want to spend most of their time simply doing what they enjoy, there are associate's programs available at hundreds of schools offering food service programs. While the chef may pursue further knowledge later, an associate of science degree in culinary arts is a great start. Both a Bachelor of Science and an Associate of Science degree may lead to certification by the American Culinary Federation (ACF), which is an acknowledgment that the chef has met their high criteria for excellence.

Some schools also offer diploma courses that can be finished in 18 months or less. These programs can get the student to the point where he or she can begin to work in the culinary field and earn money. Generally, these graduates are able to obtain entry level positions where they can get hands-on training in the field. If getting started quickly is important, then this type of education is a good way to start. The chef can always take more courses later if he or she wants to progress further.
