Culinary Techniques

by Kathleen Gagne

While many people can follow a recipe, most people are not aware of the number of culinary techniques that can be applied to make the food preparation process easier. Some of the simpler, most basic techniques include how to chop an onion, how to prepare a perfect artichoke, and how to knead dough. Many of the techniques commonly taught to chefs are virtually an art form and may contain aspects that have been handed down through generations.

Studying Culinary Techniques

It is important for student chefs to gain a comprehensive knowledge of the basic principals and procedures related to the culinary arts. Learning about culinary techniques pertaining to certain types of cooking is a key element of success. Some of these techniques will be applied to preparing appetizers, vegetables, entrees, breads, and desserts. Understanding how to prepare food quickly and successfully depends on learning the skills and techniques that will make the meal a masterpiece.

For those who want to become experts at food preparation, focusing on the simplest of techniques will make a difference in how they approach their daily tasks, and how the results are perceived. There are courses devoted specifically to learning basic techniques that can be used in a variety of situations. These courses are offered at most culinary institutions and form a basic component of the curriculum.

It is a good idea to look for a culinary program that combines both modern and classical cooking techniques into one comprehensive program. In addition, it is critical for all culinary students to have a basic grasp of the techniques involved in kitchen management, sanitation, hygiene, and safety. As the student progresses through his or her chosen curriculum, learned culinary techniques will become easier to apply to a variety of situations.
