Culinary Training

One of the great things about becoming a culinary arts professional is that a candidate can earn a culinary training diploma in as little as 12 months. That actually includes receiving a diploma from one of several world-renowned culinary institutes that have branches in many major cities. Schools such as Le Cordon Bleu, Johnson & Wales University, and the Florida Culinary Institute, as well as several others, offer general and specialty programs to get culinary artists started on their careers.

Finding the Right Culinary Training

For those who love to cook and really appreciate the praise they receive year in and year out, obtaining the culinary training necessary to turn a loved pastime into a fruitful career is a wonderful choice. One of the key factors contributing to success is finding out which program is best suited to the kinds of cooking the candidate enjoys, as well as the length and cost of programs and the location of the school.

A basic course in the culinary arts should include elements of classical, French, and American methodologies and techniques. Specialty areas include concentrations in Baking and Pastry, international cuisine, and many others. Depending on the type of career the candidate is considering, he or she can go further than a diploma to an Associate of Science degree or even all the way to a four-year Bachelor of Science degree. The latter usually includes a significant number of general education and business courses that will equip the graduate with management options.

Look for programs that lead to American Culinary Federation (ACF) certification. Becoming certified recognizes a candidate's culinary qualifications and can open doors for employment.Higher levels of certification can be achieved throughout a culinary career with the appropriate training and experience. As an overview, diploma programs generally qualify graduates for entry level positions, while associate's degrees may lead to apprenticeship levels.
